Pt 2. The Reawakening: Wandering into Wholeness and Learning to Trust the Voice Within
Nov 09, 2025
You know those mornings when you wake after a storm, the air feels fresh, there’s a little mess all around, but somehow everything feels lighter?
That was me after those forty-eight hours.
Still in Italy, with decisions waiting to be made, I felt calmer. The personal storm had cleared space for something new.
If you’ve ever travelled solo, you’ll know that quiet moment, the one where you breathe deeply and realise that the clouds have cleared, the sun has returned.
And that’s the thing about travel, and midlife, both teach us how strong we really are.
When we face big shifts alone, we pass through fear and uncertainty and come out stronger. Self-belief begins to rise again, like the moon emerging from behind the clouds and filling you with light.
Tears and the Body’s Reset
I’d cried a lot the day before, tears of frustration, fear, and release.
For me, tears are medicine. They always have been. I learned that after my marriage ended and I experienced a bout of PTSD.
There’s something powerful about crying isn’t there? do you know what I mean?
It's like a reset; through releasing the emotion, you feel a sense of calm. In fact, science tells us that emotional tears contain stress hormones like cortisol, crying literally helps your body rebalance.
Tears allow for healing.
That morning, I woke knowing two things: It had passed and I felt at peace.
And with that came a quiet trust, that had been forming through the last 2 years of travel, that I didn’t need to control what came next.
The “I Don’t Know, But It’s OK” Moment
As I left Puglia, that small, unassuming Italian town that had given me the space I had needed unknowingly, I didn’t yet realise how much it had changed me.
I sang along to the radio, feeling light again.
I didn’t have the answers, but I had peace. The question that had haunted me—'what now?'—didn’t cause any dis-ease anymore.
Isn’t it strange how we can avoid the biggest decisions until life simply says it’s time?
That’s exactly what happened to me.
I realise now that this is one of midlife’s greatest lessons: learning to trust your intuition again.
When we stop running from uncertainty, clarity begins to rise.
Have you ever had that moment, when clarity didn’t come from thinking, but from letting go? Sounds almost counterintuitive, heh? But it's in the stillness, in the letting go, that we can hear our inner voice.
Signs and Synchronicities on the Road
Driving has always been my moving meditation. My son and I used to drive the winding hinterland roads of South East Queensland, music up, both in our own little worlds of peace. It’s definitely one of my ‘places’ for allowing space and ideas to come up.
So, as I wound through the Italian hills and farmland, I felt my now calm brain recognising the little signs over the past few months like breadcrumbs leading me forward. …of places mentioned, of unexpected offers of homes available, discussions around a lifestyle I am seeking…
Midlife is teaching me this: when you stop forcing, life starts flowing.
Synchronicities, signs, timing, they only become visible when we’re still enough to notice.
Do you ever get that feeling too, when life starts subtly dropping signs of your next path that you just need to trust and follow?
The Light Returns
By the time I reached Salerno, I felt renewed. The skies had cleared, the mountains glowed in the sunlight, and I was ready for a day of outer exploration after a night of inner healing.
I took the ferry to Amalfi, surrounded by the hum of tourists. As the crowds rushed to take photos and selfies, I sat quietly on the steps, lemon gelato in hand, watching it all unfold.
I didn’t feel the need to rush.
That’s what I love about solo travel, you don’t have to follow the crowd. You can sit back, observe, and set your own vibe. Maybe that’s what midlife feels like too, finally creating life on your own terms.
As the ferry left the port, the sunlight scattered gold across the water and I could taste the salty air.
And then, turning back toward the mountains, I saw it, the full moon rising, pale pink and luminous.
The same moon that had shone a light on what was needed to be addressed, now rose gently over calm seas, reflecting how I was feeling inside.
It was peace, pure and quiet.
Sometimes it’s not about knowing what’s next. It’s about realising that you’ve made it through.
The Journey of Self Trust
As the boat cut through the water, I realised I wasn’t the same woman who’d arrived in Italy.
Something had shifted, unexpected, unplanned, but undeniable.
As I watched the shadows fall on one side of the mountain, shining bright on the other, it felt like looking at the dark and light between fear and clarity.
I didn’t have a plan, just a deep knowing… a deep trust… that something new was forming quietly.
Like the water splashing into the light of the sun, I could see the haze of a plan.
It didn’t come with details or deadlines. Just an inner knowing to keep moving forward.
Maybe that’s what midlife transformation really is, the quiet return of self-trust.
It’s when you stop asking 'what if?' and start saying 'I can'.
I wasn’t going to return back to the old version of me from 2 years ago, the one that, to be honest, was living in survival mode.
Have you ever had a trip or a moment when you left not knowing what’s next but trusting it was already unfolding?
Because that’s where I found myself, somewhere between letting go and leaning in.
The storm had passed, the skies were clear. This was only the middle of the story.
🦋 The awakening doesn’t announce itself, it simply arrives when you do.
Maybe you’ve had a moment like this too, when clarity didn’t come from knowing, but from surrender.
When you stopped trying to control the next step and simply trusted that you’d find your way.
✨Take a quiet moment this week to ask yourself:
What is my inner voice whispering to me right now, and am I ready to trust it?
